My Broken Wrist

So let me just re-cap how this all happened... (And let me just warn you, it may be a little graphic!)

~Slipped on wet tile floor in Havasu on Saturday (our first day there) while getting Kim a Hop, Skip, & Go Naked cocktail (or like Morgan says... a Hop, Skip, & Fall Down)
~Went to urgent care for x rays & they informed me that it was broken.

~Went to the orthopedic doctor in Havasu Monday morning. After looking at the x rays he recommended I have it reset because it wasn't perfectly lined up after the break and if I left it that way I could look at having problems with it down the road.  I was SO not prepared for something like that especially on vacation so he informed me that I had 2 weeks to do it, so if I decided to do it once we got back to Colorado I was still able to. He put me in a hard cast and off we went to enjoy the rest of our week in Havasu!

~I then called my dear client Carolyn whose son is the head orthopedic doctor for the Rockies. She gave me his number and I called to get in with the hand and wrist specialist in his office for as soon as we got home.
~I was able to get in Monday to see Dr. Kummer. They took off the hard cast and took new x rays. I didn't mention anything to her that the doctor in Havasu said. I wanted to see what she had to say and get her opinion. Well, she said the same thing he did. So as much as I was not wanting surgery it made me feel better that they both recommended me do the same thing. She informed me that it was something I didn't have to do but with what I do for a living and as much as I use my hands she HIGHLY recommended me to have it reset. So she explained the whole process. It would be an out patient surgery that I would be put under for. Its called a closed reduction because no incision is made. Then there would be 2-4 pins put in to keep it in place during the healing time. And, OH MY GOSH, I got the ebby gebbys thinking she had to re-break and then the thought of having pins in my bone coming out of my skin... And then she informed me that 2 weeks after surgery I was going to have to clean the pins twice a day. Oh it was a bit overwhelming! But I knew it had to be done. So I scheduled surgery for thursday.
~So Thursday morning came and Morgan brought me to the surgery center. I must say, I was a little nervous! Morgan was so great though! He stayed by my side till they put me under and brought in to the operating room. And then as soon as I woke up and was in recovery he was back and ready to take care of me. I was in pain but thank goodness for the pain pills. So for 2 weeks I was in a soft cast and I just took it easy and really didn't do much. And let me just say, it was quit depressing!

~2 weeks after surgery was my post op appointment where they took the soft cast off, re x rayed it, showed me how to clean the pins, put me in a hard splint, & saw the therapist who gave me some exercises to start doing with my fingers. I was a little nervous to see the pins for the first time cause I wasn't sure what to expect. It was definitely pretty crazy to see metal coming out of my skin.

~So I'm 3 weeks since surgery now and I am counting down the days to get these pins out. And then therapy begins!
~I will update this as things progress. I am a little nervous about getting the pins pulled out but several people have assured me that it's not that bad! We'll see!

Our Week In Havasu

Since we were only going to be going to Havasu once this summer we went for a whole week. And not to mention we were driving 15 hours with 2 dogs, so we really wanted to make the most of our stay once we got there! The dogs did great for that long of a car ride. We were a little worried about Coop because it was his first long drive in the car. But with a little benadryl he did great!

So, little did Morgan know, we were celebrating his 30th Birthday while we were there with all of our family. So he thought everyone was coming at different times during the week, but it was so fun cause everyone was there together! So when we arrived Friday night my Mom, Dad, Grandmom, Auntie Kim, & Steve were already there. And then Saturday the O'Malley clan arrived! It was so fun to have everyone there together to celebrate! Saturday we spent the day hanging out in the pool. We had lots of yummy appetizers and cocktails! And then we had a fabulous dinner with ribs, pasta salad, potato salad, & corn soufflé. It was quit a feast! And then Morgan was spoiled with some very nice gifts!

Well, I guess before I go any farther I need to back up a bit and explain my silly, stupid accident that has been quit the ordeal! After being in the pool for about an hour, Kim said she wanted a Hop, Skip, & Go Naked cocktail. So I went in the house to get her one and I wasn't completely dry and I totally slipped and fell hard on my right wrist. It happened so fast I'm not sure exactly how I even fell. I just know it was hard! I sat there for a while just praying it wasn't broken. So many things were running through my head... I need to cut hair, this is the 1st day of our vaca, it's Morgan's BDay, we have guests coming in 2 weeks, we have a big night out with our neighbors, how am I going to do my hair... I could go on and on! I just kept thinking I have so many things coming up, this can't be happening. So my Mom and Auntie Kim convinced me that I better go get it x-rayed. So off to urgent care we went. Luckly it wasn't busy. So they took x rays and after the dr looked at them I could tell it wasn't good. Sure enough it was broke. They put me in a splint till Monday and then that's when we went to the orthopedic dr. He looked at my x rays and recommended I have it re-set because of the way the bone was not lined up perfect. I was so not ready for that especially being on vacation for a week in Havasu. So he did say I had 2 weeks to have it re-set in case I decided to do it once we got back to Colorado. So he then just put me in a hard cast and said to see the orthopedic dr in CO as soon as we got home. So after all that, we continued to enjoy our week! I totally made the best of it and was still able to have fun!

So back to our trip... Sunday we spent the day out on a beach. We set up a shade tarp and some chairs. Played some washers. Enjoyed the sun. Had the dogs out there with us and they had a ball! It was such a fun day!

Monday morning Mike & Kim and Auntie Kim & Steve left. So then it was just my Mom & Dad, Grandmom, Pat, Mikey, and Morgan & I for the remainder of the trip. Monday was spent relaxing by the pool and the orthopedic dr visit. Along with my broken wrist my dad wasn't feeling well either. He had been sick and on 2 different antibiotics and then I think coming to Havasu in the 110 degree weather with lots of partying definitely didn't help. He ended up going to urgent care too where they took chest x rays and confirmed that it wasn't pneumonia. They put him on a new antibiotic and an inhaler. He just really needed to take it easy and drink lots of fluids. (and yah, water not booze!) He was such a trooper and tried to do all he could to feel better.

We spent 2 days up at Moabi. (Morgan's favorite place  to go and hang out!) We had lunch at the Naked Pirate and then went to the beach for a couple hours and played some washers, listened to some music and had a drink or 2! It is such a beautiful boat ride up there and back! I love going up there too!

So, all in all, despite my fall and my dad not feeling well, it was still a wonderful week in Havasu! I just love it out there! I definitely could have stayed a couple more days! I really miss going out there more often, but we just live too far away now :( Such a bummer! I guess it's one of the things we get to look forward to when we move back!

On our way home
